5 WAYS TO AVOID A DULL AND BORING LIFE

Hey friends, how are you today? How was your week? What did you do over the weekend? The girls were home; they were both able to visit for their Fall Break.  We took them and a few friends back to college on Sunday.  I must admit, it is getting easier to leave them behind.  

Talking to the Lord about them, talking to them about the Lord helps to settle this mama’s heart.  Ultimately, life’s choices are theirs’ to make, they will fail at times, in their walk with the Lord.  They know that the Lord never withholds forgiveness. He gives it freely and willingly.  They are reminded that holiness is the standard; it is God’s standard for His people.  The road to holiness though is paved with forgiveness, grace and mercy. Christians sin, but sin should not be the pattern of a Christian’s life.    

Benny and I had an enjoyable ride on our way back home.  We talked about everything, including music, our family, God’s faithfulness to us.  Do you think the life of a Christian can be boring and dull? Really, I want to know your thoughts.  I recently read that a Christian’s life isn’t always exciting and interesting, and I admit, I was stuck on that first sentence.  First, I don’t think any one, Christian or none Christian lives an exciting and interesting life all the time.   I’m pretty sure, everyone at one time or another goes through life at a mundane pace and believe it or not, some people look forward to the mundane.  Is your life dull? Do you think you live a boring life? If you do, why is that? What constitutes a boring life?

Secondly, why is a Christian’s life dull or boring? That statement declares that my life isn’t always exciting and interesting, and I suppose I never really thought of my life as dull nor is it boring.  There is so much to do, right? There is so much to see; so many fears to conquer, so many victories to grab hold of, in this life. 

Let’s put this into perspective, friends.  I AM a Christian.  It isn’t a clothing I put on, at the beginning of the day and then take off.  It is actually who I am when I accepted Christ as my Savior.  I AM a Christian.  Everything I say and I do should flow from this identity. If it is therefore, my identity, then how can my LIFE be boring or dull? If I am bored, is that because I am a Christian? 

If you ever find yourself bored because you are a Christian, here are five ways to help you out of that state:

Read the Bible and pray.  Do not hurry through this process. During this occasion, ask the Holy Spirit to reveal to you, what He wants you to see and write it down in a journal.  This will help in memory retention. We are prone to forget.

Now remember prayer and Bible study should not be done in isolation.  Obedience to the Word of God must follow.  The Bible does not contain suggestions nor negotiable commands.  Obedience is not an option.

Look around you, are there people who need you to love them? Remember love is best expressed through actions.  Jesus Christ, Himself, demonstrated that, by obeying His Father, when He died on the cross for our sins.

Are you a wife? This title comes with responsibilities, so does parenting. And if you have a job outside the home, well, I’m surprised you have time to breathe, much less be bored.  

More than likely, if you are reading this, you are also a blogger.  Nope! No boredom there, either. 

If these are done on a daily basis, I can assure you, I do not expect to hear from you, that you are bored, or you live a boring life.  Add to this list, responsibilities at church, such as Awana or Sunday School; boredom? Surely not!

  3. I like this topic a lot. I sometimes feel bored or in a slump. I spend a lot of time completing school and I think that has become a part an integral part of who I am. When I have free time, I don’t know what to do with myself. Reading backward, as I am spending my free time reading your blog (instead of being bored hehe) I enjoy baking as you mentioned in one of your more recent posts! Blessings!!! :))

  5. Love what you said about who we are is our identity in Christ.. from my experience people say Christianity is boring because they want to do stuff that the word of God does not permit if we are to live pure lives.
    I have a lot of Christian friends and we live life together other then working in ministry and being in our word on a regular, we also have home groups and birthdays we celebrate together and games night, gospel concerts, travel together and all that stuff. We intentionally spend time with each other that’s the fellowship part of Christianity. Being a Christian comes with abundant life and we have to live and walk it out together

    • Spending time together with other believers is so precious and encouraging. We live in an area where there are only 3 or 4 other believers close by (we live in the Canadian Rockies, on a dirt road – kind of in the woods 14 miles out of the next village!), the rest of our neighbours are either of no belief or eastern belief like buddhism and re-incarnation. They silence us, we are not allowed to talk about Christianity.
      They can silence us but they cannot keep us from praying for them! Whenever I have an opportunity to fellowship with other believers or we get to visit family in Missouri (the Bible Belt!) it’s just so uplifting to be in an environment where you are accepted for who you are and talk about what is dear to our hearts.

  6. I, Elfriede, am not bored and my husband Mike isn’t either.
    But what a great reminder to stay close to the Lord! There are some days when I go about my work without involving the Lord and it’s never pretty. Everything just goes better with Him!
    Next Tuesday the women’s Prayer Meeting is starting up again at our home. Sometimes, just like right now I am a bit weary about it because I don’t feel equipped for leading it. I am trying hard to trust the Lord because I don’t think that He would put me into this uncomfortable situation if He knew it’s not the right thing for me.   11. Haha! Nope , never bored! I get restless sometimes when I am eager to do things and I’m waiting for others, but who has time to be bored! The world’s definition of exciting and boring are different from ours. I get excited seeing God at work in someone’s life, seeing my children grow in faith, seeing answered prayers. And I’m so busy I haven’t even had time to do all the things I want to do! Like blog and read blogs! 🙂

  14. Not bored here either. If the Holy Spirit is resident within you, there are more than enough tasks to fill your days. Prayer, Bible study, thanksgiving, gratitude, charity, and the list goes on. The problem I believe if a Christian is bored is that the individual does not want to do that which God is directing him or hr to do. Then, there is a lack of joy resulting from this disobedience. Repentance is a good way to regain the joy of your salvation, and to add to the list of things on the spiritual agenda for the day. Excellent post, I enjoyed it greatly.

  15. A former pastor once said, “Sin is fun or so many people wouldn’t be tempted by it.” But this is only true initially because sin makes us poor, wretched and miserable. Loving God is a grand adventure only to those who are living it.

    • amen and amen 🙂 you are very right, Lena. Sin comes with too many consequences, I think. Most times I think if we thought our decisions through before actually making it, we more than likely would not make most of our decisions 🙂 God always desires the best for us

  16. Not bored over here! There are times that slow down, and then I think, “Oh, good. I get to read a book!” or I can spend more time on a blog post, or extra time in devotions.
    Non-Christians’ perspective of Christians depends on us. Do we show the joy of the Lord in our faces and attitudes? Do we look like something they want to join?

  17. Boring…nope, not here! 🙂 I understand why some people think a Christian life might be boring…but I think that’s because they are viewing Christian living as restrictive. Oh if you are a Christian you can’t do this or that or whatever else it is that the world says is fun and exciting. I don’t have enough time in the day to do everything that I want to! There are so many avenues of life that I haven’t had a chance to explore yet! Does housework sometimes feel overwhelming? Sure. Does washing, cooking, cleaning, and then repeating day after day sound like it has the potential to be boring and mundane? Of course it does, and in fact, sometimes it is! But, as I have grown in my walk with Christ I have found these things have become….less boring? Seriously, when you start to view everything you do as a service to not only your family, but to God, it (over time!) starts to take on a whole new perspective. Washing the dishes is one of my LEAST favorite chores. In fact, I very often don’t do dishes anymore since I assign that task to our older kids. 🙂 But when I do take the time to do them, I don’t find myself bored anymore. Is it fun and exciting? Not necessarily, but it is an act of service that I can do for my family. I also take this time to either pray or mull over something in my mind. Life is too full and busy to be bored. 🙂 God Bless!

    • Finding joy in the apparent drudgery of life is truly a blessing from the Lord. And, with the mindset that I do all things to glorify Him and through His power, we can be thankful for any of the tasks that confront us. Blessings to you today!

    • amen 🙂 the mundane can sometimes be described as boredom, but as you said, it totally depends on how you look at what we’ve been called to 🙂 christian life and life as a christian should be interchangeable, but at times, we separate it into two different entities. As christians’ we’ve been called to live life abundantly (John 10:10). It just possible to be bored, when we serve a God who is the very epitome of excitement 🙂

  18. I tend not to get bored, probably because when I was a child, if I complained of boredom, my mom put me straight to work! 🙂 When it comes to Christian growth, I find boredom is disappears when we’re truly walking with God. He’s always keeps things interesting and unexpected.

  19. I don’t think Christian life is boring at all. There are tons of things, as you mentioned above, that we as Christians can do that brings excitement and exuberates fulfillment in our lives. Everyone’s idea of excitement is different so I believe one should discover what that is. Thanks for giving us ideas on how to spruce up Christian living❤
