SHOULD I GO, OR I SHOULD I STAY?

Hey friends, how are you today?  Wow! Fall is here already.  Where did the time go? How are you, friends? Really… I would like to know.   It’s been a while since I’ve been on this platform.  I have no excuse.  I have been busy, indeed.  But most of my busyness is steep in ‘my business’.  My time has been disproportionately in my favor. Although, I’ve completed the Lord’s business, I’ve done what felt comfortable.  You know, I like my comfort.  The blog can sometimes be uncomfortable, because so much of me is in my writings.  Sometimes hiding is safe, isn’t it?

Years ago, I read a quote that said, “safety is not the absence of danger, but rather the presence of God”.  A very profound statement then and certainly a wise one today.  If I seek my own safety first, before obedience, what then do I leave for God? Sometimes obedience and safety do not go together.

Text of Matthew 6:26-27 displayed over a cloudy sky, emphasizing a message about faith and value.

Safe is safe and comfortable. Recently, I told a friend I love being married.  I know what you’re thinking and that’s not it.  God, in His infinite wisdom placed man as the head of the home.  What that means for me is that I follow where he leads.  I get to hide behind him.  We both benefit from his good decisions, but he alone suffers the consequences of his bad decisions.  See… I told you, I love being married.  ‘Head of the house’ makes complete sense to me.

A quote from 1 John 4:18 emphasizing the power of perfect love over fear, set against a background of ocean waves.

Just a note to the men out there.  You are accountable for your own actions.  Huh!  Does that mean I am accountable to mine also? Huh! Interesting.  What about my inactions? Am I responsible for not doing what I’ve been called to do? I’ve been struggling with that lately.

I like tasks.  I know… I know… you’ve said that before, Brenda. I can follow instructions, especially if it is listed.  All instructions from the Word of God demand obedience.  And some may require more faith than others.  Especially those God has called just me to complete.  Not my husband, not my children, not my parents, nor my brother and sisters.  Just little ‘ole’ me.  I did say before, I like to hide, right?

Well… that reminds me of a story in the Bible.  You know which one I’m talking about… Jonah! In my case, fear keeps me away from obedience.  I want the end result.  I want all the t’s crossed and i’s dotted.  I want the beginning, the process and the final result.  I want to know everything, Lord.  Tell me how this chapter will unfold before I start.

To obey God without seeing the whole of the matter, that is the question.  I’ve heard several songs with the words, “if you say go, I’ll go; if You say stay, I’ll stay”…but the saying is easier than the doing.

The doing involves my willingness.  The going may mean alone. The staying may mean I’m seen.  As Christians, we each have our own path.  Although, we journey together; the instructions from the Word of God are for all His people. At times, our paths deviate from others.   And at times fear wins, because ‘what will people think’?

They may not understand why we have to go there.  We may not always have the explanation for our convictions.  That may cause confusion and discomfort, especially in a family.

Faith, only a small five letter word.  But, Lord, this small word wants so much from me.  It’s so much easier to pretend I never heard that command. Or perhaps, Lord, You made a suggestion. Perhaps You want us to negotiate.  You didn’t really, really want me to do this, right?

Text on a cloudy background: 'For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind. 2 Timothy 1:7'

Yes… the Lord and I have these conversations, perhaps a little too often.  Second opinions and all that…Ahh Lord God, send help.  Oh right! You already did.

Obedience is never the easiest solution.  It’s always the best but not easy. It’s perhaps easier when the people around us are all moving in the same direction.  When we live in a house with Christian family members. When our church is loving and supportive and we form part of that collective. When we have the same goals. When the instructions are clear and seemingly achievable.  Easier, yes… but never easy.

A quote from Romans 8:18 written on a cracked asphalt background, discussing the contrast between present sufferings and future glory.

It’s those instructions that come just for me; these are the scary ones.  To have this child, when I’m already ninety, for crying out loud.  To walk around the walls seven times, instead of ten. To enter the presence of a king, without an appointment. To have a child, while still a virgin.  To walk on water without foreknowledge.  I’m guessing the ‘yes..Lord’ demanded supernatural strength.

People may not always understand why we have to go this way.  We may not always understand why we go this way.  But rewards when we obey far outweigh the disobedience in the long run.

  1. Brenda, I have been subscribed to your blog for a long time, but I admit I don’t generally read your posts. It’s a me thing, not a you thing. But today I felt pulled to read this and I am really grateful that I did. You’re talking about something I am going through right now.

I have been grappling with this question- what’s my role? And I have been counseling with the Lord, and with my friends, and with my faith leaders, and even with my therapist and my AI assistant, Claude! And here’s what is so wonderful and amazing about the Lord. He is so active in our lives. And He has been handing me answers and showing me the way forward. Don’t you think it’s surprising that the scripture I have read on my own these past days is saying the same things you’re sharing here? It’s like a Bible study class that is happening between you and me but the Lord is the facilitator and He is guiding the discussion. Wow.

I can relate to what you’ve shared here. I have been asked to do things that I feel inadequate to do. I have been putting myself outside of my comfort zone to be of greater service to my Lord. And I am not performing at the level I would like, and I hate feeling exposed and deficient. But. You said it, Brenda. I’m not actually doing any of this alone, because the Lord is with me.

I have been asked at church to lead the choir. Nobody else wants to do it, so it’s me. And I’m scared and I don’t feel like I’m doing it very well. I’m awkward with people and I don’t know what to do or say… and I can’t find someone to play the piano for us! I’ve had to rely on choir members to play during rehearsal. And I struggle to get people to come sing with us.

But, when I feel discouraged and ask the Lord if I can quit, He says no. He tells me to keep trying. And He helps me. At our last practice we had two men, one who sings high and one who sings low, which is a huge blessing because I couldn’t get any men to sing with us. And one of the men brought his wife, who initially didn’t want to sing with us, but then decided to join in! And she knew of someone who might play the piano for us. And she asked and they said yes! So it’s all coming together and we are even starting to sound pretty good.

And it seems like a small thing. But music is an important part of worship, and I was reminded of that when a gentleman told me on Sunday that he hears God best in worship music. We’re going to sing “Living Water,” a new song by Emily Crocker. It’s lovely and the message, to me, of those verses about living water, is that when we are doing the Lord’s work it feeds our souls. “Feed my sheep,” our Savior said. And He, the Good Shepherd, leads us to calm waters and green pastures, and we partake of living water. His word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path. And those who drink of living water thirst no more!

Even though my life feels stressful and overwhelming and I feel inadequate, I’m putting my trust in my God and I am stepping out of my comfort zone to assist people in need, to care for my children and my family and myself, to be a friend to others, and to praise the Lord through song. It feels so scary, and I hate that just living life can feel like that right now. But God is holding me in the palm of His hand. I am strengthened by His grace and love. And Christ said to take His yoke upon us, for His yoke is easy and His burden is light. And it is. Because I’m yoked with Him, and I have Him right beside me when I do His work.
