Hey friends, how are you today? How was your week? Shorter days and cooler temperatures have heralded the approaching fall season. On one hand, I’m more than ready for days like these; short, cool, and with even more clouds. The heat and my hot flash moments have been at odds with each other, which makes for some very uncomfortable days. On the other hand, the fall season rarely lingers in my neck of the woods. Almost on the onset of the actual fall season, winter sets in and this is where we have a problem. Unlike fall, winter has the very bad manners to linger and linger and linger… way past her welcome. How are you…really? What’s the weather like in your neck of the woods?

In our Ladies Sunday School class, we are going through a book on prayer, it is called Becoming a Woman of Prayer, by Cynthia Heald. I admit I have enjoyed this topic and the angle which the author used for this book. Initially, I wondered about it because it seemed to suggest that God will ‘answer’ all our prayers in the affirmative, and we all know that’s not true. The main verse of this book is found in Psalm 37:4.

Delight… in the Lord and He will give you the desires of your heart. In too many cases, we neglect the importance of the first part of this verse, (the author didn’t, by the way’). Delight yourself in the Lord, what does that mean? Before we answer, here’s another question. Have you ever been very glad the Lord didn’t give you something you thought you desperately wanted at the time? Do you know that the ‘desires of my heart and at times, what I want, do not always agree?

Only One Person knows me inside out, as He should because He created me. He knows me completely, nothing about me, within me, or will affect me is withheld from His knowledge of me. He knows me better than I know myself. When He says He will give me the desires of my heart, He does just that! He gives me the desires of my heart, sometimes I just don’t know way these desires are yet. He is faithful to keep His promises.

Delight in the Lord… how do I know I delight in the Lord? It’s very simple actually… I obey His Word. I delight in the Lord when I obey His commandments. I can obey His commandments when I have a relationship with Him. As I spend time with Him and in His Word, that relationship is strengthened and knowledge of Him and of me is gained. As I get to know Him, I also know now His standard for my way of life. As I obey His commandments, I demonstrate my joy, my ‘delight’ in Him.

How are you? How was your week? What book of the Bible are you studying?

The weather here in So. IL is great right now. Leaves are already turning with the cooler nights and the oppressive heat is gone-not sure for how long but will rejoice in what we have.
The verse you shared is one I turn to often. Your study should be good. My group is just starting First Samuel. The first three chapters are full of little tidbits to apply to our lives. God’s word is always relevant. Have a great week!

Thank you, my friend. It has been a wonderful study. Our weather has certainly had its moments, for September it has been usually high. But we thank the Lord

We’re enduring a tropical heat wave here too. Can’t complain though–it’s only been a week. Some parts of the country endure hot and humid for months on end! Tomorrow promises to be much more comfortable, with more temperate weather into next week. / I couldn’t agree more, Annie, that it’s a GOOD thing God didn’t answer “yes” to some of the unwise requests I’ve pleaded for in the past! Also agree that the deep-down desire of my heart is to please him. When I become distracted by a lesser desire, I’m so thankful he withholds it until my understanding catches up!

Amen and amen. Very, very said.. as I look back I am so very thankful that He did it always give me what I ask for, but He always gives me what I need, the things my heart truly desired

The topic of prayer is very interesting to me too. That book sounds like a good read. Psalm 37:4 is an exciting verse and it’s simple to focus on the “desires of the heart part” and lose sight of the ”delight yourself in the Lord part.” Over the years, I have had to ask God to teach me how to delight myself in Him. Nice post, thank you Brenda. ❤️

Praise the Lord! To Him be all the glory. Indeed we do have to ask the Lord to delight in Him because on our own, we cannot

Incredible heat here. I was thinking about ‘desires of the heart’ and how ‘the heart is desperately wicked, who can know it?’ I pray that God changes the unknown parts of my heart to the right desires. But thankfully we are saved by Christ’s perfection, not our own! We are starting the year off with Ruth, then going to Samuel 1 and 2. Have a blessed Saturday!

You are totally right! That’s why we accept the good things He gives, even when we didn’t know it was what we wanted. Our God is good

I’m studying the book of Jeremiah as well as Psalms and Proverbs. Lots of meat in Jeremiah and comparisons to current morality in our nation is thought-provoking.

Praise the Lord! I must reread Jeremiah soon, I haven’t read it in a while. Thank you for sharing

What happens or what do we do when we delight in our LORD and He still doesn’t give us the desires of our heart? We stand and say similar to Shadrach, Meshach & Abednego, “Even if He doesn’t save us, we will not bow down!” John The Baptist was not delivered out of that jail until his head was on a platter. Yeshua knows my bottom line desire is to spend eternity with Him. Any other desire fulfilled is bonus prizes, whether I want to throw a pity party for not getting any of them or not.
Its still very hot here, with no cool of the evening walks yet. We just got a day of rain. Now its hot and even more humid. Soon we will be crying about how cold it is. Oh boy, us fickle, never satisfied humans.

Amen and amen 🙏🏽 we can never be completely satisfied with our lot 😃😃. The Lord gives us the desires of our heart, sometimes we just don’t know it yet. I loved this statement with Shadrach, Meshach and Abednega. May I be like them

My week has been a little crazy. I ended up in the ER and was admitted to the hospital for chest pain. I am wearing a heart monitor for two weeks and new meds to help a heart that is adding too many beats. It was my husband’s birthday, so he celebrated by sitting with me waiting on tests results. Years ago, I tried to sell some property I owned – could find no one interested though I prayed and prayed for a seller. My husband and I went to the Philippines as missionaries. While we were overseas and had given up on selling the property (it was not listed with any realtor) someone contacted my daughter and asked where we were. They wanted to buy the property. If God had answered my earlier prayer – who knows what I might have done with the money. But now we really needed it as we were coming home with no home, no jobs, nothing to begin life again in the USA. That property sold at the right time – when I had given asking God for a seller. His timing was perfect.

Praying for you, my friend. May the Lord keep you secure and safe in His Hand. 🙏🏽 our God always works it out for our good. Sometimes, waiting is hard especially when we have plans, but we trust in the lord because we know we are completely and irrevocably loved by our God.

If we delight ourselves in the Lord, the desires of our heart will change to be conformed to the heart of Jesus.
We are at the end of quite the heat wave here with several days over 100 but tomorrow that will change. 80 degrees will feel cool tomorrow 🙂

Isn’t it wonderful that 80° can feel cool? It all comes down to perspective
