FROM HERE TO THERE

Hey friends, how are you today? Well, winter has arrived in our neck of the woods and perhaps she may even stick around for a while.  It has been cold, and it has been white. Seemingly, everyone and everything hibernates during these snowy and cold days.  Comfort clothes, warm soups and hot coffee are favorite pastimes among the locals.  What’s the weather like in your neck of the woods? 

Every year the Lord allows us to see, cements the person we are becoming.  Day after day we act in particular ways that formulate into habits that build our character. Our characteristics tell the story of our beliefs.  They say to others what we believe about ourselves and about our God.  I love this quote by Oswald Chambers; “You will never cease to be the most amazed person on earth at what God has done for you on the inside.”-My Utmost for His Highest

That’s what the past is for; for us to reflect on the goodness of God.  For us to bask in His faithfulness and grace.  The person I was ten years ago, should be more mature today. She should be more grounded in her faith today.  She should love better, be more patient, demonstrate self control, give more willingly, be more joyful when hardships arise.  But how do I get from here to there? 

A Christian’s primary goal is to become more like Christ.  Year after year, we build upon that foundation that was first laid when we accepted the Lord as our Savior.  We were not good people, in fact even our good works were not good at all.  How do we know that? Because the Bible tells us so.  But because we were so loved by the God of the Universe, He sent us the Gift of His most Precious Son to save us from our sin.  How do we know that? Because the Bible tells us so.  We were on our way to hell; a place that separates us from our Loving Father.  That is the penalty our sin deserved. How do we know that? Because the Bible tells us so.  

Friends it is impossible to know the depth of our depravity without the Word of God.  It is also impossible to take comfort in the breadth of the unfailing, unwavering, love of God if we are not in His Word.  Everything we need to know about life is found in the Word of God.  In today’s world, truth matters, and absolute truth is found in God’s Word.  

Here are four reasons we should daily read the Bible.  

Truth is found in the Bible. It is there we will find the truth necessary to combat our enemy.  Satan relies rather heavily on subtlety and subterfuge to deceive us.  We see this pattern in Genesis when he changed a few words and added a few more which ultimately caused the downfall of man. He even attempted to tempt the Lord Jesus by using Scripture. We need to know truth for ourselves in order to discern the lies.  

Knowledge is found in the Bible.  The history of man and our world; our past, present, and future is found in the Word of God.  Everything we need to know about ourselves and about God is found in Scripture.   We’ve been told ‘there is nothing new under the sun’, which reminds us that the depravity we see around us today isn’t a new thing. Sin isn’t in its infant stage; we’ve been here before.

Hope is found in the word of God.  On almost every page of scripture, hope can be found.  The promises of God to mankind are littered across the Bible from Genesis to Revelation.  There is the hope of eternal life; the hope that the difficulties we face will one day to an end.  The hope that as we surrender to the Holy Spirit, we become more like our Lord Jesus Christ.  

Tools for daily living is found in the Bible.  In the Bible we are told how to treat all types of people. From friends to enemies, we are told to be kind, to love, to give and to forgive. We are also told what our reactions should be when troubles come our way.  We are told to ‘count It all joy’ and to ‘lay it at His feet’.   The standard for daily living is found in the Word of God.  He has left anything to chance, it’s all in His Word. 

By now we know that the Lord is ‘no respecter of persons.  He does not negotiate; He says what He means, and He means what He says.  When the world fades away, His Word remains unchanging.  We gain when we read the Words of our Heavenly Father.  We become better people when we daily spend time in His Word.

  5. Swedish theologian Karl Barth made one trip to America in 1962. Some seminary students asked him of all the books and studies he had written, what was the greatest thing he had learned… and they listened with anticipation what he would say.
    He said “Jesus loves me, this I know, for the Bible tells me so.”

    “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” John 1:1

  7. “COMFORT clothes, warm soups and hot coffee…⁉️ What in the world is comfortable about those stilts!!? I can understand the warm soups and hot coffee, but shoes should be for walking in, not looking into second floor windows. 😁
    Anita and I read the Bible cover to cover every year. Last year we did The Complete Jewish Bible which does offer some insights into the Hebrew roots of our faith, but lots of it just seemed like the translator wanted to show off the Hebrew words. And I was disappointed that even in this, he uses the English practice of capitalizing a different word for the formal Name of God, YHWH. In KJV and others they use LORD and he chose to use ADONAI, as when these translations use Lord or Adonai it is referring to a word in the original that just meant that, Lord or Master.
    We’ve done the ESV (my favorite), NIV, KJV, NASB and The Message. This year we are doing the ESV again, and it only takes reading about four chapters per day to finish before December 31 (exceptions being Psalm 117 and 119!! 😉).
    Alternatively, reading the Bible aloud, one can read each of most of the books in this marvelous library in less than a couple hours in one’s native language. A two-to-three-month project if anyone is really serious and wants additional time for study.

  8. I love this: “Everything we need to know about life is found in the Word of God. In today’s world, truth matters, and absolute truth is found in God’s Word.” Truth in a nutshell, then you so beautifully expanded.
    And I put hope in what you said: “We become better people when we daily spend time in His Word.” I do read Him daily, and I hope that I’m becoming a better person without even realizing it. I know that He works in me through His Word.

  9. The Christian life is truly a journey—“A long obedience in the same direction”—as biblical scholar and pastor Eugene Peterson said.

    It’s snowing goose feathers here in Oklahoma, Brenda, but its 34 degrees. Nothing is sticking.
