2020 STRIKES AGAIN

Hey friends, how are you today? How was your weekend? September is here, friends.  Somehow my brain can’t wrap around that fact.  Somehow, the month of March keeps being repeated.  Fall is a few weeks away and too soon; summer will be a distant memory. How will the summer be remembered? Thankfully, the Lord placed the girls in our lives, and they refused to sit still.  There is a Latin saying that goes this way, “veni  vedi vici”.  It means we came, we saw, we conquered.

It was a good summer, thankfully we took photos to remind ourselves that 2020 was an actual year.  My weekend was a bit busy actually too.  I have already said before, I don’t really enjoy ‘busy’, but ‘busy’ was unavoidable. When I remember the busyness of last year, I accept the necessity of a year like 2020.  I think what would have been better, is advance warnings.  If only I was told that a year like 2020 was unavoidable, perhaps I would have been better prepared.  I laughed at myself as I said/wrote these words.  It isn’t always a true statement, is it?

My husband’s dad passed away last week.  Although, his death was expected, it still caused heartbreak.  Death does that, doesn’t it? Whether it is expected or not, the loss is still felt.  The sorrow and distress is there, just waiting for the memories to crowd our minds.   We knew, in advance, the possible outcome of his constant hospital visits added to the fact that he was 91 years old. How do you prepare for death?

Even if I had previous knowledge of the happenings of 2020, what would I do differently? The truth is, more than likely, I would not do much.  Death is certain, judgement is certain; even with that knowledge, the truth is many will go to hell.  Many will not be ready, even given the time.  Many will do nothing differently, even with the knowledge of a Savior.

As Christians, we know much about the Word of God.  We know much about the character of our God.  Yet, when uncertainties come our way, we turn to ourselves, or friends or ‘stuff’ to solve our problems.  We may not know everything, but we do know some things.  We may not know what tomorrow brings, but we do know WHO holds tomorrow. We may not know when death will strike, but we do know that death has lost its sting.

We may not know how safe this neighborhood may be, but we do know that safety lies in the presence of God.  We may not know when the next trouble or trial will enter our lives, but we do know that our God has promised that we can count it all joy when they do arrive.  We may not know where our next meal will come from, but we do know that the God who provides for the sparrows and the lilies of the field, will too, provide for us.

We may not know what the balance if the year will bring our way, but we do know that the God of the Universe is trustworthy, and He loves us absolutely. How are you doing?

  1. So sorry to hear about your father-in-law. May the Lord comfort your hearts. Yes, it’s true that we have a choice as to whether we will prepare or not when we receive a warning. We also have a choice as to whether we count it all joy when trials come. May we choose wisely.

  2. Brenda, I so appreciate this post and all you reminded me of. Our God—the One who loves us most and best and unconditionally is still on the throne, no matter what 2020 brings our way.

I was so sorry to read about your FIL’s passing. It’s so difficult to navigate grief. My FIL passed away unexpectedly last fall, and it took time to just process, to cry, and to figure out how to manage the hole his absence left in our lives. I’m saying prayers for you and your husband.

  3. Ah, prayers in your time of loss. I read peace in your post, but the death of a loved one is hard. We are struggling over here, with cancer in the lives of three friends. We do take our comfort from our loving Heavenly Father.

  4. Sorry to hear about your loss, Brenda. My prayers are with you and your family. It never matters how “expected” a death is, it still catches us by surprise when it happens. Praying for you and yours during this difficult time. God Bless you!
