HMMM…THANKFULNESS…

Good morning my friends, how are you today? How was your week? Jazz, our cat, is presently crowding me.  I am sitting next to the open kitchen window, (open window, I said; for those of you, who live in the north east, you know what Iโ€™m talking about). Anyway, she (Jazz) is literally vying for what I very much consider to be, my space.  I think she believe she can catch the birds, as they flitter from tree to tree or as they wonder on the grass, searching for food.  The window screen is down, she canโ€™t get outside, but that does not stop her from trying.  Do you suppose, she thinks she is a lion or perhaps a tiger? She is definitely fun company though.  Today is going to be a superb, beautiful, gorgeous, lovely, enjoyable, and sunny day.  Today, we are hoping to bask in 70ยฐ.  Praise the Great God of heaven!

Itโ€™s so easy to be joyful when life throws us chocolates instead of lemons (well, maybe flowers instead of chocolates; I donโ€™t really like chocolates).  When life is seemingly problem free, or when people and things fall into place, joy and laughter became a bit easier.  Perhaps though, you are like me, when life is seemingly perfect itโ€™s almost scary, isnโ€™t it? When is the other shoe going to drop, you wonder? Are you carefree or do you still worry when life appears perfect?

Although life isnโ€™t always perfect and problem free, Iโ€™ve met a few people that have brought me to shame, when complain is my game.  These people seem to have suffered so very much and yet they praise the Lord through it all.  Most have suffered far more losses than I can ever wrap my head around such devastation. Yet in it all, they remain thankful.

But thatโ€™s the key isnโ€™t it? Thankfulness; gratefulness is the glue that keeps them from falling to pieces.  Being thankful; counting my blessings bring the joy and peace that soothes my heart, when it hurts. Recalling the grace and mercy and faithfulness of my Great God enabled them to be joyful in spite of the pain, they were suffering. Thankfulness; do you suppose thatโ€™s why God commands it in this verse?

I love this hymn, written by Johnson Oatman Jr. with this beautiful chorus:

Count your blessings, name them one by one,
Count your blessings, see what God has done!
Count your blessings, name them one by one,
*Count your many blessings, see what God has done.

How do you respond to pain?

    • Though, despite your station in life, there are going to be challenges and struggles in this life. Because of free will, God has allowed us to choose whom we are going to follow, self or God. It is learning to cherish (have a thankful heart) in good times and bad, for God allowed it to happen to you so you could become more like His Son. 1 Peter 2:21 says, “For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, LEAVING YOU AN EXAMPLE, so that you might follow in His steps (ESV). Good times, Bad times we must remember to give thanks to God. 2. Jazz looks very intent as she sits at the computer! ๐Ÿ™‚

2 Thessalonians 5:18 is a verse I’ve been practicing for awhile, though I need to do that much more often. It occurred to me the first time I tried it (during car troubles) that there is a benefit for me “on the other side” of the practice. It gives me a better perspective of the circumstance. Currently I’m practicing it through some health issues–nothing major, but they require some short-term and some possibly long-term adjustments to “normal” life. I used to think of any adjustments to normal life as a negative, but now, I look on these adjustments as a positive.

    • Thankfulness certainly helps us to view our circumstances with peace and safety. I love that verse, I donโ€™t always bring it to mind when I should, but I want to do better. Definitely be more positive. Thanks for this comment, May the Lord bless you

  3. Oh, Brenda! My heart does a bit of a lilt when I see your post in my inbox. Smiles tug at my mouth when I click and see your first photos. I always look forward to reading you.
    I am GRATEFUL! ๐Ÿ˜Š
Plus, “Count Your Blessings” is the hymn I finish with two times a week when I read the newspaper and devotions, and then sing hymns with my ladies at the assisted living. We have so many blessings to count. They are a big blessing to me, and so are you.

  4. Thankfulness is something we need to help us on our journey in this life. It helps us to not get so bogged down by circumstances. God does not need our thankfulness. He doesn’t need anything from us. God instructs us to be thankful in the bible for our benefit not his. ๐Ÿ™‚

  5. Hurray for open windows!!!! So jealous! We are getting there…slowly, very, very slowly! ๐Ÿ™‚ I find that my whole perspective on life changes when I focus on my blessings. It’s not easy to do, especially when things are hard and there is so much going on that wants to drag us down. Thank you for the lovely reminder to focus on God, He always puts things into perspective ๐Ÿ˜‰ Now if I could just remember to do that first instead of complaining as my go to response….God Bless!

    • ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚โค๏ธit is rather instinctive to complain, isnโ€™t it? Thatโ€™s what we do naturally, we need to be intentionally counting our blessings in spite of the hard ships. I pray that will be more us rather than complaining

  6. Amen, that is so true! When I focus on my problems, mainly Celiac, I get frustrated and discouraged and have a tendency to complain. When I am thankful with my eyes on Christ and I praise Him, it sets my heart free from worry and complaining every time. May we all keep our eyes on Jesus! ๐Ÿ™‚ God bless you!
