OH LORD, HEAR! OH LORD, FORGIVE!

I love to read. I remember as a child I would be so caught up in my books, that I would not hear when I was called.  Needless to say, you know I got into trouble every time that happened.  My favorites at the time were mystery books, especially Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys. I loved Nancy Drew books!  I tried to get my girls into the series, but they were not having it.  (What do kids know anyway?) Praise the Lord for parents because we do know better, right? Right? Ohh come on… say ‘right!’ IMG_3229  For the past month, I have ‘studying’ the book of Daniel. This is a book filled with God’s grace and mercy. It is a beautiful story of God’s responses to man’s decisions.  I love the format used to write Daniel.  It is so picturesque; I can actually visualize the various scenes taking place.  Because I may be slightly cynical by nature, (just slightly, mind you) I love the scene taking place in chapter 5. As a child the story of Daniel and the Lions’ Den was told so many times, I thought it was the beginning and end of the book. But after reading it for myself, I realize the absolute beauty of this book.  Therefore I chose chapter 5 as my favorite.  Oh! Do you want to know what chapter 5 is about? Well, I can’t say because I would ruin the surprise.  I hate spoilers and I know you do too; I’ll let you read it for yourself.  Let’s talk about it in the comment section.Dan 9 19This verse called to me yesterday, although it is not in chapter 5.  Daniel was praying in this part of the book.  Actually he was pleading with the Lord on behalf of his people and Jerusalem. Something terrible was going to befall them and he wanted the Lord to stand in the gap for them.  Of course the Lord was already doing just that, but because this tragedy was going to be so catastrophic, he could not see that.  You see I know the end of the story, but Daniel didn’t. But here is Daniel in sackcloth and ashes begging the Lord to intervene. This started me thinking.  I don’t know the end of my story; do you know the end of yours? Why am I then not in sackcloth and ashes (figuratively) pleading with the Lord for help? Why do I not beg for His intervention? Do I think I am entitled to receive His help?

  1. I especially love the book of Daniel also. It reveals what we will soon be experiencing ourselves, and how we need to be living, as did Daniel, in complete obedience and worship of our Lord to overcome through the tribulations we will endure before our Lord appears. It is also such a great and necessary key to unlock the book of Revelation. Thank you for liking my blog, and I am blessed to have encountered you and yours.

    I read Nancy Drew and the Hardy Boys, too! I also read Trixie Beldon and the Sugar Creek Gang series.
    In verse 22 of Daniel 5, “have not humbled your heart, even though you knew all this” – may this not be how we treat the Lord after all He’s done for us!

  9. I loved Nancy Drew, too! I also appreciate the book of Daniel and the inspiration and challenges I find in it. The Sunday school song, “Dare to be a Daniel” comes to mind 🙂

  10. I appreciate your post, Brenda. The first time I really studied the book of Daniel, it came alive to me! It is picturesque. And he was such a man of integrity and living well. I admit, I don’t have the passion I should have for living for Jesus. He’s been gently reminding me to come back to my first love relationship—with Him.

  12. Oh my gosh! To this day I am still obsessed with Nancy Drew and the Hardy Boys! Just last night I was watching some of the old 70s show. I’ve played the games, read the books, and written the fanfiction! Total nerd!! XD

    On a slightly more serious note, I’ve always thought Daniel was more…whimsical almost than other books. It’s one of my favorites too and I enjoyed your insights! May we have the loyalty and strength to stand as Daniel and his companions did.

    In any case, I like your point about how the Lord IS working regardless of whether or not we are pleading for His work and for His will to be done… but when we DO, the victory is all the more sweet and personal. Isn’t it such a privilege that He allows us to be involved in His work? ❤ ❤

  15. Nancy Drew!! Loved those books so much…and our avid reader wants nothing to do with them!!! I am so sad, lol:) Love this verse…I have feeling reading Daniel may be in my near future:) I was reading Psalm 51 the other day, and am going to be mulling over it for a bit longer, but then I will be heading that way. Thanks for the suggestion, it sounds like something I need to read at the moment, lol!

  16. The passion for God’s help will always be there as long as be believe. I think the question is, not are we desperate enough, but will we submit to him at all times, both through times of happiness AND distress? By the way, you look gorgeous! I love the denim blue. 🙂 ❤

  18. I read ALL the Nancy Drew books! And I love the book of Daniel. What sticks with me is how Daniel honored God with his life. Then he interceded for an entire nation, and God honored him. I want to be a Daniel!

  20. Love this. I agree, reading Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys was my absolute favorite. When my neice said she was reading it I couldn’t believe it was still making its rounds :). But very insightful pull from Daniel 5. You are right, we should be reflecting and pleading with God for our country and people.
