SHHH… DON’T SAY IT

I talk too much! I think it is somehow programmed in my DNA. I am prone to speak. Listening is a skill; I am still working on it. I talk to my husband, my children, friends and family. I even talk to myself, when no one is around.  Thankfully the walls are not talking back, or else I would really be in trouble.   My mind is constantly coming up with free advice no one requested.  I have something to say about everything. I can hardly wait for you to stop talking, because I need to say something.  Last year, I acknowledged that fault and asked the Lord for help in that area.  After a few months, I exchanged talking TOO much, for hardly talking at all.  That’s me! NO balance; this way OR that way. In my own strength, that’s what I do.  BUT WHY? Why do I do this?

Proverbs 31:26 She opens her mouth with wisdom, And on her tongue is the law of kindness.

I love this verse, Heavenly Father. Can You see her, Lord? Who is she? Can she be me? I would like her to be me. This woman who thinks before she speaks, she is quick to listen but slow to speak (James 1:19). She realizes that words have power, they can be detrimental and deadly. They can breathe life and comfort.  James 3 6She knows that, so she slows down and she draws near to You, the Author and Finisher of her faith. She knows on her own, she is prone to say too much. Can she, please, be me Lord? I want to be her. This woman understands that in too many words, she is likely to be dishonest.

Proverbs 10:19 In the multitude of words sin is not lacking, But he who restrains his lips is wise.

She speaks kindly to people. She speaks truth, tapered with wisdom.  She knows not just when to speak, but also how to speak.  Before she rebukes anyone, she seeks You. She knows she can very easily speak out of anger and frustration. She can be impatient with her words, so she runs to You, she finds comfort under the shadow of Your wings. Can I be her, Father? I want to be her.

Thank you, thank you, thank you to all who have taken the time to follow the blog.  I am humbled by your comments and likes on the posts.  May the Lord be honored on this adventure.

Have a blessed day and remember: God’s love is unfailing, unwavering and unconditional!

Do you share my struggle? Or do you and your tongue share perfect harmony? Let me know in the comment section.

  2. I can honestly relate. God is actually taking me through a season of quietness. Even if i know the answer, He wants me to be quiet and allow other people to speak. It is so very hard but i’m learning to listen more this way. May God help us!

  3. Thank you for sharing. I am learning to seek Him before I speak. And when faced with difficulty I have learned to brace myself, stay calm and let the other person talk. Many of times the Lord will help me out with what to say after they are done. I do well when I lean on Him. When I take it upon myself, I make a mess of things. I was once told that the power of a women is in her
influence. It is in her words and actions that can change, persuade and impact. I totally believe that to be true. I believe our words are so powerful. I struggle now because I am believing God to bless me with a platform to speak His Word. I believe if it is His will , it shall be done💖Thank you for sharing

  4. I know the word says what’s in the heart will come out but sometime I think my heart speaks and my tongue misinterprets! and goes right on speaking. Maybe one of these days the two will get fully together.

  5. Truth here!!! So much about the balance and the heart to hear God say, “Speak…” or “Keep silent!” Ran headlong into that even today! Thanks for the reminder and looking forward to reading your blogs more and more!

  6. Too many words. Yep, that’s me. 🙂 But I do find that when I can express myself through the written word, I don’t have to talk so much in person! Nice to meet you! You have a beautiful blog.

  7. Oh boy do I struggle with this! Sometimes I speak too much (ie without thinking) and sometimes not enough. I am working on processing what is said first, and THEN responding. It is a constant, uphill battle 🙂 But I would LOVE to be that woman. The one who speaks with wisdom. The one who has something “worthy” to say. I will be praying about this more consistently now! Thanks for this post.

  8. I definitely talk too much! lol. I am working on it though. I try to make sure what I am saying is helpful to the situation or necessary. I believe I will be delivered from my tongue but my face! I need to pray on that. I dont need to say any words and its all over my face. One day at time, I will keep working on it.

  11. What truth! My problem is I don’t speak up for myself or clammed up and don’t say what I NEED to say. My biggest problem is my facial expressions. My body language is what I’m praying for for me. I have a look that tells what’s on my mind even if I’m fighting with how to say it right. We will get through this with His help!

  12. I talk to myself too 🙂 I am a talker and a listener, just depends on my mood. We definitely can become better. I have a post coming out Thursday about not keeping our mouth shut, but it has to do with speaking the truth. We need to speak the truth in love at all times to the best of our ability. I find comfort God helps us grow better each day when we turn to Him.

  13. Girl, yes…I still have that problem sometimes and that’s why I pray the scripture that you put in your post…James 1:19. It’s funny because I just went through something today and had to ask God to work it out of me, especially during this fast for lent. It’s amazing how God digs deep down and pulls up things for us to address…it’s only because he loves us…lol. I’m glad you wrote this post and was very transparent about your struggle…we are all works in process, still being shaped and molded by the potter. As long as we’re working on it, God can work on us…lol. Great Post!! ❤️

  14. Amen! And the truth will make you smile. He already sees you as that woman in Proverbs. Allow His Holy Spirit to continue to mold you and you will be even better than you already are!

  15. We all falter. But that’s why we were Blessed with The Holy Spirit when we became His children. The Brenda I know is indeed the woman of Proverbs 31:26. I greatly enjoy the wisdom that you impart upon me each time we meet. I always learn something new from you. Not to mention the joy and laughter and how much we can’t stop talking!

  16. Honestly I have a post similar to this one that is about three-quarters finished, I can’t seem to go back to it and complete it because I struggle with an untamed tongue at times (James 3:5) …I will get it though because I’m not about to allow Satan the last word or thought in that!!!!

      • We have to pray, pray, pray for self-control, replace pride with humbleness and trust in the Lord! And as Christian brothers and sisters hold one another accountable.. even God knows it’s tough for us, my NLT version says in James 3:2 ‘Indeed, we all make many mistakes. For if we could control our tongues, we would be perfect and could also control ourselves in every other way.’ ..Sounds impossible, but His word in Matthew 19:26 also says, ‘..with God all things are possible.’
…We can be Proverbs 31 women, we have to encourage one another along!!
