LET’S START HERE!

Ps 119 11Long, long ago, when I was a child, we regularly participated in a competitive game called Bible Boxing.  Don’t worry, there was no bloodshed, just my pride if I lost (I am just a tad bit competitive).  This activity was based on Bible verse memorization. You had to KNOW your verses!  This was not a game for the faint of heart! Sometimes we played the game in pairs and sometimes as individuals, from 2 to however many wanted to participate.  The game consisted of people reciting verses from memory (obviously). The verses could not be a repeat of one said earlier.  If one hesitated or got a verse and the reference wrong, they were ‘out!’ We had fun playing this game.  I did not realize at the time, though, how much it would impact my life.  Years later, these verses come back to mind again and again.  The Word of God is quite amazing, isn’t it? These kinds of games, and Awana provided the perfect opportunity for me to memorize God’s Word.  And with that also came knowledge of the events of the Bible.  Hebrews 4 12Why should we memorize God’s Word? Wellll… Psalms 119:16 I will delight myself in Your statutes; I will not forget Your word, and Joshua 1:8 This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success. Need I say more? Okay then, here are a few more reasons, eight more to be exact. Now these verses, you will have to read for yourself..

  1. To combat temptation (I Corinthians 10:13)
  2. To conquer fear and negative thoughts (II Timothy 1:7)
  3. To give wise advice (Proverbs 31:26)
  4. Our only defense against sin (Psalm 119:11)
  5. To live a godly life (Psalm 119:105)
  6. Because the Lord commands us to (Deuteronomy 11:18)
  7. We can share the gospel anywhere (Isaiah 52:7/Ephesians 6:15)
  8. To defeat the enemy (Ephesians 6:16)

We read in,  2 Timothy 3:16-17 All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good works”. It is our desire, according to,  2 Peter 3:18… grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ…, we cannot do that without spending time with the Lord.  Memorizing scripture is a good way to begin the new year.  A fun way is to use the ‘word’ for the year.  My word is ‘WISDOM’. What word did you choose? Find the verses with that word, put it in context and memorize the verses with your word in it.    It will help us to remember the word and we are being changed at the same time.  WIN!  Is there a verse that goes with the ‘word’? Share it, we would like to know. One verse with the word ‘wisdom’ is Proverbs 31:26  She opens her mouth with wisdom and on her tongue is the law of kindness.  Yes, I said/wrote it from memory.

  4. So grateful for the Word of God! And God bless my Sunday School teachers who made us memorize and recite our Golden Verses every week! Thanks for reminding us of the importance of keeping up those practices in our adult lives!

  6. I played a game which I’m sure was similar called “the window.” We especially loved playing it on bus trips and long road trips of any kind. We would chant/sing “The window. The window. I’ll throw you out the window. If you can’t say a Bible verse and say it on time, I’ll throw you out the window.” Then whoever was “it” would say a name. What a wonderful memory you just brought back. Sadly, the youth group of most of the churches around here is not as large and involved as ours was, but I can definitely work on this tradition as a family. It definitely forced me to learn new verses and stay up on my memorization. Amazing how much the brain retains and God can bring to our minds exactly what we need, when we need it.

  7. Amen! I so much love this post. It’s a great deal living by God’s direction…and yeah I love memorizing it really helps me to take over when dah naughty boi called devil comes. I’m still growing in Grace. God bless you for this 😘.

  9. Amen! Love this post so much. Its truly imperative that we not only just read the Lord’s word for just reading sakes but to hear what he is saying to us through his living word, ask for his guidance and comprehension of his word! I love memorizing scriptures daily! And I use them to run the devil when he try to attack my mind with lies! God bless you always! Much love! Xxoo 👐💕🙏

    I really enjoyed memorising Bible verses when I was young. Its one of my goals for my children this year.

  13. Amen!! And I love this post.
    Honestly, the Word of God is something I can never for the life of me put into words, it’s wonders!! I am an addict of studying it, even though I sucked at memorizing it as a child, lol
