WHY HOME SCHOOL?

Twelve years ago, we made the decision to home school our two girls.  That initial decision was frightening to say the least, and although I am a teacher by profession, the thought of home schooling never occurred to me.  I was to be responsible for our kids’ education, all the way through high school?  Preposterous!  Who had done that before? Was it even successful? Will they be accepted at a college?  Do they offer scholarships to home school kids?

You can rest assured that the decision to home school came with lots of prayer and quite a bit of research.  Because who attempts anything, without being fully prepared?  Then again, how prepared can you be, until you actually start?

Our key verses when we began to homeschool are found in Colossians 3:23-24, And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance; for you serve the Lord Christ. dsci0188.jpg

We all needed to be reminded of these verses constantly throughout the years.  A bit of information about our girls; Cleo is a sophomore at college, she has been home schooled since the second grade and yes, she did receive a tuition free scholarship.   Anna has been home schooled from kindergarten; she is a high school senior.

Why did we choose to home school? Initially, I found myself, too often, home schooling Cleo when she got home in the afternoon, even if I did not have the proper term for it back then.  When she got home, we went over her school work and if there was anything which I felt further explanation was necessary, I went ahead and taught her. More often than not, we were spending an additional two, sometimes three hours on school work. Poor kid, she may need therapy!  Benny (in his infinite wisdom) felt the Lord’s calling to home school. He had talked about it before, but I was not quite ready.  The decision was made easier, when a friend decided to home school her boys at the same time.  We looked out for each other and shared tidbits we learnt about various subjects.  This relationship made home schooling throughout the years less overwhelming, because trust me, it can be!  Home schooling our girls was one of the best decisions we’ve made for our family.
